Customer Reviews

I got a charge fault indicator on my XC90 Volvo.  I contacted my dealer since the car is about 3.5 years old.  They said I just passed my 50K mile warranty for the batteries (2).  I contacted my wife’s friend who highly recommended Jim at Mac’s Volvo repair.  So I called and left a message not expecting much during the pandemic.  But I need my car to pickup groceries and medication.  Jim called back within couple hours and we discussed the issue.  He understood I was at high risk for the virus and said he could come by and pick up my car to run the analysis.  He was great… came by and picked up the keys from my front porch and kept me informed throughout the process.  Turned out the charge fault was just a poor battery.  Jim returned the car and properly wiped it down before leaving.  I’m very grateful that I didn’t have to drive to his shop and leave it during this dangerous time. I highly recommend Jim for your Volvo or BMW out of warranty service.  Yes, there is still honest and personal service in this world!  Thanks again Jim!

Customer Reviews

Genuinely nice guy who knows his stuff. He’s excellent about knowing the ins and outs of Volvo’s and known problems. Doesn’t just take your money, if it’s not necessary. If somethings out of his scope, like a muffler, he’ll bring over his neighbor who’s an expert. I’d give him 10 stars, if I could!! I highly recommend him!

Wipes down the interior after working on your  & wears a mask for safety.

Customer Reviews

Jim is a great honest mechanic! He’s very personable and extremely knowledgeable when it comes to Volvos. This past year we purchased a 2004 XC 90 from my parents. A few months ago it was due for an oil change so my husband was referred to Mac’s Volvo Service. We feel so fortunate to have found an honest mechanic that takes the time to service our car. We will be coming back to Mac’s for all our routine maintenance and repairs.

Auto Maintenance FAQs

How often should I get my oil changed?
For a long time and sometimes still today, standard practice at many lube shops is to suggest oil changes every three months or 3,000 miles. In order to know when the best time to get your oil changed is, check the owner’s manual of your specific model for manufacturer-recommended intervals. If you have any question, please call us.
Do I have to service my leased car at the dealership?
No, you do not have to go to the dealer to keep your warranty intact. In fact, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prohibits dealers from refusing to honor your warranty if someone else performs the repairs. "In fact, it's illegal for a dealer to deny your warranty coverage simply because you had routine maintenance or repairs performed by someone else," says the Federal Trade Commission. "Routine maintenance often includes oil changes, tire rotations, belt replacement, fluid checks and flushes, new brake pads, and inspections." Many dealerships will use scare tactics to try to get you to have service completed at the dealership, but you don't have to be cowed. Take your car to the certified and licensed shop of your choice and your warranty will be kept intact.
Do I need to charge my battery after I jump-start my vehicle?
To safely and properly recharge the batteries after jump-starting, they must be driven for 30 minutes (or you use a charger) before powering off or disconnecting them. Driving for this amount of time ensures that the alternator generates enough juice to recover from the drain caused by jump-starting your car.
How do I know when I need new brakes?
Look, listen
There are two ways to check for brake wear on disc brakes: by looking and by listening. First, check for wear by looking at your brake pads through the spaces between the wheel's spokes. The outside pad will be pressed against a metal rotor. Generally, there should be at least 1/4 inch of pad. If you see less than 1/4 inch of pad, you may want to have your brake pads inspected or replaced. Have you ever heard a high-pitched screeching sound when you applied your brakes? That's a small metal shim, called an indicator, which is giving you an audible warning that you need to replace your brake pads. You should be aware of this sound (which is loud enough to be heard while the windows are up, but not necessarily loud enough to be heard over the radio or air conditioner). If you hear it regularly, quickly make an appointment with with us today.
